About the Builder

When Tom Cox was eight years old, working for his father for 25 cents an hour, nailing panels to walls, he knew that he enjoyed working around construction. Now as a master of his craft in home building, Tom still has the same joy when he can help people realize their dream of home building.

Tom Cox has always found himself working in the construction industry. Some of the most enjoyable years in his life, came in the form of being an interior trim carpenter and owning a successful trim carpentry business for many years. “It helped me to visualize the different parts of a home,” he says.

Tom is a patient and humble man who values clear communication and invests himself in the dreams and ideas of his customers. “Every customer has taught me lessons, the biggest one has been to remain calm…I am there to listen and hear what my customer says.”

When he is not working, Tom loves to spend time with his son. His family serves as an inspiration to his craft. Although never much of a mechanic himself, Tom enjoys being with his son underneath the hood of a car. “I am very happy to be his helper. Sometimes we are able to reassemble things without parts left over.” Tom has also taken refuge in gardening and being outdoors. He finds it relaxing to learn about various plants and flowers.

Though he remains cool and composed during the building process, Tom takes great pride in returning to a home that Cox & Shepherd built. “Returning to a home after it truly is a home for our customer is when I can reflect on the process.”

Cox & Shepherd has helped build many dreams for people interested in home building, but the company has also allowed Tom Cox to live out the dream of an eight year old boy, happily nailing wall panels for his father.
